Where Creativity Begins: Finding Inspiration in Unexpected Places

You know that wonderful feeling when an idea pops into your head and you suddenly can’t wait to get back to your workspace? Maybe you’re already imagining the colors, the fragrance, the packaging, and what you’re going to name your latest creation.

And then there are those other days.

The days when you stare at your fragrance collection, surrounded by endless possibilities, and your brain offers absolutely nothing. Not even a tiny little spark.

Sound familiar?

Whether you’re pouring candles, making soap, whipping up body butter, creating wax melts, or building your bath and body business, inspiration is a big part of what makes creating so much fun.

But here’s something worth remembering:

Inspiration doesn’t always arrive when you’re looking for it.

Sometimes it finds you in the most unexpected places. And sometimes it shows up while you’re doing the laundry.

Your Next Great Idea Might Be Hiding in Plain Sight

Think about the places you go and the things you experience every day.

The smell of freshly baked cookies coming from a bakery. The first crisp morning of fall. A walk through a garden after it rains. Fresh sheets on a Sunday morning. That wonderful smell when you walk into a coffee shop.

These aren’t just everyday experiences. They’re little pieces of inspiration waiting to become something special!

A candle maker might turn a rainy afternoon into a cozy, comforting candle collection.

A soap maker might be inspired by the beautiful shades of a sunset and create a gorgeous layered soap.

A bath and body maker might remember a favorite beach vacation and dream up a collection that brings those sunny memories to life.

And a freshie maker might turn the feeling of a summer road trip into a whole collection of fun, colorful designs.

The magic isn’t always in finding something new. Sometimes it’s in seeing something familiar in a completely different way.

Same Fragrance, Different Imagination

Here’s one of our favorite things about the maker community. Give ten makers the same fragrance oil, and you might get ten completely different creations.

Imagine a warm vanilla fragrance.

One candle maker sees a cozy evening curled up under a blanket.

A soap maker imagines a creamy, beautifully swirled bar of soap.

A wax melt maker dreams up an adorable bakery-inspired collection.

And a body care maker?

They’re already thinking about a luxurious vanilla body butter.

Same fragrance. Four completely different ideas. And that’s what makes creating so much fun! Your experiences, your personality, your imagination, and even your sense of humor all influence what you create. You don’t have to make what everyone else is making. Your own interpretation is what makes your products special.

Just remember to check that your fragrance oil is suitable for your intended application and follow the appropriate usage guidelines.

Look Beyond Your Worktable

Sometimes, when you’re searching for inspiration, the best thing you can do is leave your workspace.

Seriously.

Step away from the wax melter.

Visit a farmers market. Wander through a bookstore. Take a walk. Browse a home decorating store. Listen to music that brings back memories. Pay attention to the colors, textures, conversations, and little details around you.

Maybe a beautiful blue ceramic bowl inspires an entire coastal collection.

Perhaps an old family recipe brings back memories that turn into a nostalgic holiday fragrance line.

Or maybe you see an absolutely ridiculous greeting card that inspires the funniest candle name you’ve ever come up with.

Not every idea has to be elegant or sophisticated. Sometimes the silly ones turn out to be the most memorable!

Let Colors Inspire Your Next Collection

Here’s a fun way to approach inspiration.

Instead of starting with a fragrance, start with a color.

Think about what different colors make you feel.

Soft blues might remind you of peaceful mornings, clean linens, or a quiet day at the beach. Warm oranges and golden yellows might bring to mind autumn leaves, pumpkin patches, or sunny afternoons. Deep greens might inspire a botanical soap collection or a fresh, woodsy candle line. And rich purples? Maybe something mysterious, luxurious, or a little dramatic.

Once you’ve chosen a color palette, start imagining the fragrances, product names, packaging, and overall feeling that could go with it. Sometimes a whole collection begins with nothing more than a color combination you love.

A Little Nostalgia Can Go a Long Way

Some of the strongest inspiration comes from memories.

Think about the smells you remember from childhood.

Grandma’s kitchen. Freshly cut grass. A summer carnival. The inside of an old-fashioned candy shop. A Christmas tree brought into the house. The smell of sunscreen on a family vacation.

Those memories often carry feelings along with them. And that’s what makes them so powerful! When you create a product inspired by a memory, you’re not just creating something that smells wonderful- you’re creating something that might remind someone of a special moment in their own life. That’s a pretty amazing thing to be able to do!

Your Customers Might Be Your Secret Creative Team

Have you ever had a customer say:

“Oh, I wish you made something that smelled like…”

Pay attention to those moments! Customers can be wonderful sources of inspiration. Maybe someone is looking for a candle that reminds them of their childhood home. Perhaps a customer wishes your soap came in a different color or fragrance. Or maybe people keep asking whether you offer a matching lotion, room spray, or wax melt.

Those conversations can lead to ideas you might never have considered on your own. (You don’t have to follow every suggestion, of course!) But listening to your customers can help you discover new opportunities while making them feel like they’re part of your creative journey.

And that’s pretty special.

What If Your Creativity Has Left the Building?

First things first.

It happens.

Even the most creative makers have days when their imagination seems to have packed a suitcase and headed somewhere tropical. (Without us!)

Running a creative business involves so much more than creating. There are orders to fill, labels to print, inventory to manage, customers to help, supplies to order, and approximately a thousand other things demanding your attention. Sometimes your creative energy simply needs a little time to recharge. And that’s okay.

Try something different. Experiment with a fragrance you haven’t used in a while. Revisit an idea you abandoned months ago. Make something just for fun, with absolutely no plans to sell it.

Or give yourself permission to take a break.

You don’t have to create something new every single day to be a creative person.

Sometimes the best ideas show up after you’ve stopped trying so hard to find them.

Keep a Little Collection of Creative Sparks

Here’s a simple idea we love.

Start an inspiration collection.

It doesn’t have to be anything fancy.

It might be:

  • A notebook filled with product ideas and sketches
  • A folder of photos on your phone
  • A Pinterest board with colors, designs, and packaging ideas
  • A running list of creative product names
  • A collection of customer suggestions
  • A folder of seasonal ideas you want to revisit someday

Whenever something catches your attention, save it. A clever product name? Write it down. A beautiful color combination? Snap a picture. A fragrance that reminds you of something wonderful? Make a note. An idea that seems completely ridiculous at the moment? Save that one, too.

You never know when three seemingly unrelated ideas might come together and turn into something amazing! And trust us, there’s nothing quite like remembering you had a brilliant idea last Tuesday and having absolutely no clue what it was.

Try Looking at Your Products Through Fresh Eyes

Inspiration doesn’t always mean creating something completely new.

Sometimes it’s about taking something you already make and giving it a fresh twist. Maybe you have a fragrance that sells beautifully as a candle.

Could it inspire a coordinating wax melt collection?

Could you create a seasonal version with new packaging?

Could you pair it with another product for a thoughtful gift set?

Or perhaps you have a soap design you absolutely love, but you’ve always made it in the same colors.

What would happen if you changed the color palette?

Sometimes the smallest changes can make an existing product feel exciting all over again.

And the best part? You might already have everything you need sitting right there in your workspace!

A Little Creative Challenge for You

The next time you’re feeling stuck, here’s something fun to try.

Choose one fragrance oil from your collection.

Preferably one you haven’t worked with recently.

Now, instead of immediately thinking about what product to make, ask yourself:

  • What memory does this fragrance bring to mind?
  • If this fragrance were a color, what color would it be?
  • What season, place, or feeling does it remind me of?
  • Who would absolutely love this fragrance?
  • What kind of story could I tell with it?
  • Could it inspire an entire collection instead of just one product?

Don’t worry about whether your ideas are practical just yet. Have a little fun with it! Write down whatever comes to mind. You might surprise yourself.

And even if your first idea doesn’t become your next bestseller, it might lead to the one that does!

Keep Creating, Makers!

At Indigo Fragrance, one of the things we love most about this community is seeing how makers take a fragrance and turn it into something entirely their own!

A beautiful candle. A colorful bar of soap. A luxurious lotion. A whimsical wax melt. A product that makes somebody laugh, smile, or remember a special moment.

Every creation begins somewhere. Maybe your next idea will come from a childhood memory, a walk through the woods, a favorite song, or an afternoon spent doing absolutely nothing. So keep your eyes open, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to try something a little different. Because inspiration really is everywhere.

And sometimes your next big idea is hiding in the smallest little moment.

Happy creating, Makers!
