DIY Fragrant
Sugar Scrub

Just sugar, oil, and a little fragrance! Make a simple, fragrant exfoliating body scrub with everyday ingredients—no commercial base required.

Whipped foaming sugar scrub in a clear jar with sugar, leaves, a wooden spoon, and a folded towel
Beginner-friendlyHands-on time: 10 minutes4-ounce single-use batchMade with everyday ingredients

Sometimes the simplest ingredients make the most delightful projects. This easy sugar scrub combines the exfoliating texture of granulated sugar, the smooth feel of a carrier oil, and a beautiful Indigo fragrance for a fresh, handmade body treat.

Unlike our Whipped Foaming Sugar Scrub, this version does not contain a cleanser, so it will not foam. It is a quick, oil-based body scrub intended for fresh, single-use preparation.

Ingredients you'll need

Here's a 4-ounce single-use batch. Weigh each ingredient with a digital scale for the most consistent results.

IngredientAmountPurpose
Granulated white sugar3.20 ozExfoliation
Sunflower oil or another compatible carrier oil0.76 ozConditioning slip
Indigo Fragrance oil*0.04 ozFragrance (1% example)
Optional cosmetic-grade colorantVery small amount; deduct from carrier oilOptional tint
Total4.00 oz
* Maker Tip: Before choosing a fragrance amount, verify that your Indigo Fragrance oil is suitable for rinse-off body products and is within its IFRA Category 9 limit. The 1% shown is only an example starting point, not a universal safe usage recommendation.

Tools to gather

  • Digital scale that measures to 0.01 oz
  • Clean, completely dry mixing bowl
  • Dry spoon or spatula
  • Clean, dry dish or small container for immediate use

Let's make something lovely!

  1. Prepare your workspace. Clean and completely dry your tools.
  2. Weigh the sugar. Place 3.20 oz granulated sugar into your bowl.
  3. Add the carrier oil. Stir in 0.76 oz of oil until it resembles damp sand rather than a pool of liquid.
  4. Add fragrance. Weigh 0.04 oz of an Indigo Fragrance oil suitable for IFRA Category 9 and mix thoroughly to distribute it evenly.
  5. Use fresh. Transfer the scrub to a clean, dry jar or container. Use promptly on wet body skin, rinse well, and discard leftovers.
Safety first: This recipe does not contain preservative ingredients. Treat this as a freshly prepared, single-use product. Avoid the face, eyes, and sensitive, damaged, or irritated skin. Oil can make the bath or shower floor slippery. Please use caution. Products intended for sale require an appropriate preservation strategy (including preservatives when needed) and product safety testing.

Quick troubleshooting

Too oily?

Check your measurements and stir thoroughly. A scrub should be damp, not swimming in oil.

Too crumbly?

Different sugars have different textures. Stir thoroughly and adjust accordingly.

Too rough?

Try a finer granulated sugar and use gentle pressure; avoid sensitive areas.

Wondering about storage?

Don't store this unpreserved recipe in a damp shower. Prepare only what you can use immediately.
